Cycle trails

There are a number of opportunities to enjoy scenic cycle trails which are within easy reach of Fernleaf Farmstay.

Tramps, walks & climbs

Opportunities exist for walks, tramps and climbs  in the various national parks, the mountains, the Bridge to Nowhere and throughout the area.

Canoeing, kayaking & jet-boating

Canoeing , kayaking and jet-boating are all available on the The Whanganui or Whakapapa Rivers all within easy reach of Fernleaf Farmstay.

Forgotten World Adventures

Forgotten World Adventures provides self-driven RailCart tours and RailBike tours along the decommissioned railway line of the Forgotten World Highway. Learn of a history unique to New Zealand and share a story and experience that belongs to everyone.

Nestled within the deep hidden valleys of New Zealand’s Forgotten World is the ultimate way to explore rural New Zealand. Travel along a decommissioned railway line, through tunnels, over bridges and rivers and to townships that time forgot. Forgotten World Adventures shares a history unique to New Zealand. It’s truly unforgettable.

Choose to travel a segment of the line, or the entire 142 kilometres. RailCart tours depart during the summer months of October through to May from three locations,Taumarunui, in the heart of the King Country; Stratford, in the heart of Taranaki and the self proclaimed Republic of Whangamomona.

Sightseeing

We like to think that the whole of the Ruapehu Area is one great sightseeing trip. Mountains. rivers, bush and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. Popular drives include the Forgotten World Highway and Mount Ruapehu.

The Bridge to Nowhere

The bridge to nowhere is a great spot where you can cycle, walk, fish or enjoy sightseeing.

Snow activities

There is a range of snow activities including skiing, snowboarding tobogganing, tramping or just playing in the snow or sightseeing.

Glow worms

A visit to the Kakahi glowworms is a great way to finish off your day – take a drive down there after dark and marvel at this free attraction put on by NZ’s amazing wildlife! If you want to visit the Waitomo Gloworm Caves it is a handy day trip from Fernleaf Farmstay.

Parks and reserves

There are numerous parks and reserves in the Ruapehu district with various reserves and areas suitable for swimming, walking and picnicing.

Hot Pools

The Tokaanu Hotpools are a pleasant day drive from Fernleaf. At the hot pools at Tokaanu you can soak in thermal water or take a short walk to get an interesting glimpse of a natural thermal area with steaming hot mineral pools set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pools amidst the native bush.

Other activities

Too numerous to list!  There are other activities available including golf and the beautiful Tarrangower golf course at Taumarunui, a visit to  an alpaca farm, scenic flights – just ask us and we will endeavour to help.
